Sensrad and VirtuRail collaborate to strengthen tunnel safety with 4D imaging radar

Sensrad and VirtuRail have entered a collaboration to further improve the safety of automated transportation systems used in tunnel construction.

VirtuRail develops Automated Service Vehicles (ASV) – rail-less, ADAS-supported transport systems designed to automate logistics in underground construction projects. Today, the company's advanced driver assistance system relies primarily on cameras and LiDAR sensors to navigate safely and precisely through complex tunnel environments.

By integrating Sensrad's 4D imaging radar technology into the perception stack, VirtuRail aims to add another layer of robustness in situations where optical sensors alone may be challenged. Smoke-filled tunnels, dust, darkness and other visibility-reducing conditions can significantly affect camera- and LiDAR-based perception, while radar continues to provide reliable environmental awareness.

Sensrad's Hugin D1 4D imaging radar and Oden Drive perception software are designed to deliver high-resolution object detection and tracking in challenging environments, supporting safe and reliable operation even in adverse weather and low-visibility conditions.

The collaboration reflects a shared ambition to further increase operational safety by combining complementary sensor technologies. While optical sensors remain the foundation of VirtuRail's ADAS system, the addition of 4D imaging radar enhances redundancy and situational awareness in critical scenarios, particularly during emergency situations such as tunnel fires.

Together, Sensrad and VirtuRail are taking another step towards safer and more resilient autonomous transportation systems for underground infrastructure projects.
